A metric tree is a hierarchy that connects your top-level business goal (e.g. DAU or MRR) to the specific, measurable driver metrics your team controls. Use one when you need to align a team on which levers move the needle, or when debugging why a top-line metric is falling.

How do I choose the right North Star metric for my metric tree?02

Pick the single metric that best captures the value your product delivers to users — for a SaaS tool it's often DAU or Weekly Active Users; for a marketplace it might be GMV. Everything else in the tree should be a leading indicator that predicts movement in that number.
