2-to-1 Audio Signal Multiplexer

A 2-to-1 analog multiplexer can select one signal path from two sources. This example switches between a microphone-level source and a line-level source under control of a select signal. The output then feeds a defined load representing the next stage. The drawing is useful when planning source selection ahead of a preamplifier, recorder or audio processor. In a built circuit, choose an analog switch that suits the signal range, supply voltage and audio performance requirements. Add gain control or buffering where the source impedances and levels require it.

CASE ANALYSIS

Scenario

Selecting one of two audio sources.

Key decisions

  • Two source inputs: Microphone and line level feed the selector.
  • Select control: One signal chooses the active source.
  • Loaded output: The output feeds the next audio stage.

When to reuse this

Use this when an audio circuit needs to choose one source path.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can a multiplexer select audio signals?01
Yes, an analog switch can select between compatible audio signal paths.
Why are microphone and line inputs different?02
They normally have different signal levels and may need separate gain or buffering.
What does the select signal do?03
It chooses which input the multiplexer connects to the output.
