D Flip-Flop with Set/Reset

The D flip-flop is the fundamental storage element of synchronous digital circuits. On each rising clock edge, Q captures the D input. Asynchronous SET and RESET inputs override the clock to force Q to 1 or 0 immediately.

The scenario

A computer architecture student studying register files needs a clear schematic of the D flip-flop cell.

What is in this drawing

Read the decisions behind it.

01D input sampled only on clock edge

eliminates the setup/hold race condition present in SR latches.

02

Asynchronous SET/RESET override clock for initialization at power-up.

03

NOT-Q output explicitly declared to drive both true and complement busses.

Parallel arrays of DFFs form N-bit registers; adding enable (EN AND D) creates gated registers.
