Carton sealing sequence (SFC)

A carton sealing SFC makes the order of a packaging station easy to inspect. The sequence waits for a carton, moves it into position, folds the flaps, applies tape and discharges the sealed carton. Each operation has its own step and completion condition, so the chart describes both the actuator that should run and the signal that allows the next operation. This is useful when controls engineers, mechanical designers and line operators need a shared description of the station. Add timer supervision, guarding permissives, jam detection and reject handling as the machine design requires. The resulting chart can form part of a PLC functional specification or a commissioning checklist.

CASE ANALYSIS

Scenario

A packaging line needs to coordinate a carton sealer station.

Key decisions

  • Position before actuation: Stop the carton at the station before folding flaps.
  • Separate mechanisms: Keep flap folding and tape application in distinct actions.
  • Confirm discharge: Return to idle only when the carton has cleared the exit sensor.

When to reuse this

Use for a simple single-lane carton sealer controlled by presence and completion sensors.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why use an SFC for a carton sealer?01
It shows the ordered machine states and transition conditions more clearly than a list of interlocks.
What starts the sequence?02
A carton-presence sensor normally starts the position step after all station permissives are satisfied.
Can the chart show rejects?03
Yes. Add an alternate branch for failed flap, tape or clearance checks.
