Data Modeling Entity Diagram Examples

Entity diagrams map the real-world objects a system tracks — the nouns, their properties, and how they relate to each other before a single line of code is written.

How to

How to use an entity structure template.

  1. 01List the main entities

Name the core business objects — User, Order, Product, etc. These become the boxes.

  2. 02Add key attributes

List the most important properties of each entity (id, name, status) — not every column, just the meaningful ones.

  3. 03Define the relationships

Describe how entities relate (a User places many Orders; an Order contains many Items) and the AI adds the connecting lines.

  4. 04Add cardinality

Specify one-to-many, many-to-many, or optional relationships and the AI labels the endpoints correctly.

FAQ

Questions about entity structure templates

What is an entity diagram?

A diagram that shows the main objects in a domain (entities), their attributes, and the relationships between them. It is a lighter-weight alternative to a full ERD when the focus is on business concepts rather than database columns.

When should I use an entity diagram vs an ERD?

Use an entity diagram during early design to model the domain conceptually. Use an ERD (with specific data types, PKs, and FKs) when you are designing the actual database schema.

Can I export this to a SQL schema?

You can use the entity diagram as the reference for database design. ChatDiagram can also generate an ERD with explicit SQL types if you describe the schema in more detail.
