How to use an erd template.
- 01Identify the core entities
Start with the fundamental entities: Student, Course, Teacher, Department. These form the backbone of most school database schemas.
- 02Define key attributes
For each entity, list the essential fields: Student (student_id, name, email, date_of_birth), Course (course_id, title, credits, department_id).
- 03Add the Enrollment relationship
Create an Enrollment entity linking Students and Courses, with attributes like enrollment_date, semester, and grade. This is the critical M:N junction table.
- 04Extend with grades and sections
Add a Grade or Section entity if the schema needs to track multiple sections of the same course or separate grade records from enrollment records.
- 05Verify normalization
Ask the AI to check if the schema is in 3NF — no partial or transitive dependencies. This is a common assignment requirement.
Questions about erd templates
What entities are in a basic school database?
A minimal school database has three entities: Student, Course, and Enrollment. Enrollment is a junction table that records which student is enrolled in which course. Most assignments expand this with Teacher, Department, and Grade entities.
How do I model the student-course relationship in an ER diagram?
A student can enroll in many courses, and a course can have many students — a many-to-many relationship. Represent it with an Enrollment junction table containing student_id (FK), course_id (FK), and any enrollment-specific attributes like grade or semester.
What is the difference between a Grade entity and a grade attribute?
If you only need one grade per enrollment, a grade attribute on the Enrollment table is sufficient. If you need multiple grades (quizzes, exams, assignments) per enrollment, create a separate Grade entity linked to Enrollment.
How do I model which teacher teaches which course?
If each course has one teacher, add teacher_id as a foreign key on the Course table. If teachers can share a course or one teacher teaches multiple sections, model it with a separate TeacherCourse junction table.
Is a school database ER diagram in first normal form (1NF)?
A properly designed school ER diagram should be in at least 3NF. This means no repeating groups, all attributes depend on the whole primary key (2NF), and no transitive dependencies (3NF). ChatDiagram can check and explain any normalization issues.
