Function Block Diagram Examples

Function Block Diagrams (FBD) are an IEC 61131-3 PLC programming language — data flows from left to right through typed function blocks, making complex process control readable without sequential code.

How to

How to use a function block diagram template.

  1. 01List the function blocks needed

Name each block (PID, TON, ADD, SCALE) and its parameters — the AI places them as typed blocks.

  2. 02Connect the data flows

Describe which output pin of one block feeds which input pin of the next — the AI draws the typed connections left to right.

  3. 03Add inputs and outputs

Name the program inputs (process values, setpoints) and outputs (control outputs) that enter and leave the network.

  4. 04Export for PLC documentation

Export as PNG/SVG for code review or as reference documentation in a control system design package.

FAQ

Questions about function block diagram templates

What is a Function Block Diagram?

One of five IEC 61131-3 PLC programming languages. FBD represents a program as a network of function blocks connected by data-flow lines — similar to a schematic where data flows left to right.

When should I use FBD instead of Ladder?

FBD is better for continuous process control (PID loops, signal processing, analog calculations) where data flows between blocks. Ladder is better for discrete I/O logic (motor starters, interlocks, sequencers).

What is the difference between an FBD and a block diagram?

A generic block diagram is documentation. An IEC 61131-3 FBD is executable PLC code — blocks are typed standard function blocks (ADD, PID, TON) with defined behavior, not just labeled boxes.
