TEMPERATURE CONTROL

Heat Exchanger Temperature Control Loop

This P&ID shows a basic temperature control loop around a shell-and-tube heat exchanger. Product enters the tube side and leaves as heated product. Steam enters the shell side through a diaphragm-operated control valve. TT-101 measures the outlet temperature and sends an electric signal to TIC-101. The controller adjusts V-101 with a pneumatic signal, changing steam flow to hold the outlet at its setpoint. The valve is fail closed so the steam supply shuts if its actuator loses air. This is a concise loop drawing for process design discussions, operator training, and commissioning checks. Add isolation, traps, bypasses, alarms, and detailed line specifications when the project requires them.

CASE ANALYSIS

Scenario

A process engineer needs a simple outlet-temperature loop for a product heater.

Key decisions

  • Controlled variable: Measure the heated product outlet temperature.
  • Manipulated variable: Throttle shell-side steam with V-101.
  • Safe position: Close the steam valve on loss of air.
  • Signal path: Use electric transmitter-to-controller and pneumatic controller-to-valve signals.

When to reuse this

Use this pattern when product temperature is controlled by steam flow through a shell-and-tube exchanger.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does TT-101 measure?01
It measures the temperature of the heated product leaving the exchanger.
Why is the steam valve fail closed?02
Closing it on actuator failure stops heat input to the product.
What does TIC-101 control?03
It changes the steam control valve position to maintain outlet temperature.
