Single-Acting Cylinder Control

A single-acting pneumatic cylinder uses compressed air for one stroke and a spring for the return stroke. Its electrical control is therefore simpler than the two-coil arrangement used for a double-acting cylinder. This diagram shows a protected 24 VDC supply feeding an emergency-stop contact and an Extend pushbutton. The pushbutton energizes a 3/2 directional valve coil, admitting air to the cylinder. When the command is released, the valve exhausts and the spring returns the rod. The pilot light provides a quick indication that the valve coil is energized. Add a position sensor or relay logic if the motion needs confirmation or automatic sequencing.

CASE ANALYSIS

Scenario

Spring-return cylinder control

Key decisions

  • Valve type: Use a 3/2 valve for one powered cylinder direction.
  • Return motion: The cylinder spring returns when the coil is de-energized.
  • Indication: Show coil state with a pilot light.

When to reuse this

Use where a cylinder extends under air pressure and returns by its internal spring.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a single-acting cylinder?01
It is a pneumatic cylinder powered by air in one direction and returned by a spring or external load.
Why use a 3/2 valve?02
A 3/2 valve supplies and exhausts the single working port needed by a spring-return cylinder.
What happens when power is removed?03
The solenoid releases, the valve exhausts the cylinder, and the spring returns the rod.
