Electric Vehicle Battery Pack Internal Structure

This internal block diagram separates the electrical, sensing and thermal parts of an electric vehicle battery pack. Cell modules are the energy store. Voltage and temperature sensors report to the battery management controller, which commands cell balancing, the main contactors and the cooling loop. The charge port reaches the cells through the contactors, while the traction inverter is the pack's main vehicle load. This view is useful during an architecture review because it makes the safety boundary and the control paths clear without becoming a cell-level schematic. Add a CAN interface, fuse, service disconnect or insulation monitor when those interfaces matter to the discussion.

CASE ANALYSIS

Scenario

Battery pack architecture review

Key decisions

  • Measurement loop: Connects cell sensors to the BMS controller.
  • High-voltage isolation: Places contactors between charging and the cell modules.
  • Thermal interface: Shows the BMS control path to the cooling loop.

Use this view to review the parts and interfaces of a traction battery before detailed electrical design.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the BMS?01
The battery management system monitors the cells and controls functions such as balancing, cooling and contactors.
Why are contactors shown?02
They isolate the high-voltage pack during charging, faults and shutdown.
Does this show individual cells?03
No. It treats groups of cells as modules and focuses on pack-level interfaces.
