2-to-1 Multiplexer

A 2-to-1 multiplexer routes one of two inputs to a single output. The select signal determines whether Y follows I0 or I1. This small circuit is a useful starting point for understanding bus selection, signal routing and Boolean logic implementation. The drawing labels each signal separately so the many-to-one relationship is apparent without showing a gate-level implementation. Larger multiplexers use the same idea with more inputs and additional select bits. Include an enable pin when the selected output must also be controlled by a separate signal.

CASE ANALYSIS

Scenario

Selecting one of two logic signals.

Key decisions

  • Two data inputs: I0 and I1 are the sources to select.
  • Select line: S determines which input reaches Y.
  • Single output: Y carries the selected logic value.

When to reuse this

Use this for a basic data-routing or logic-selection circuit.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does a 2-to-1 multiplexer do?01
It selects either I0 or I1 and routes the selected input to Y.
How many select lines does it need?02
One select line is enough to choose between two inputs.
Is a multiplexer a logic gate?03
It is a combinational logic device that can also be used to implement Boolean functions.
