REACTOR CONTROL

Reactor Feed and Heat Exchanger Control P&ID

This process P&ID shows feed preparation and basic control around a continuous reactor. Feed leaves the tank through a centrifugal pump, passes through the tube side of a steam preheater, and enters the reactor. Steam enters the shell side through TV-101, which TIC-101 adjusts from the reactor temperature measured by TT-101. Product leaves the reactor through LV-101, and LT-101 with LIC-101 maintains liquid inventory. Each loop is shown with its field transmitter, controller, final valve, and signal lines. This is a conceptual process design drawing. A real reactor system may also need pressure protection, relief, agitation, analysis, shutdown logic, sampling, and detailed heat-balance design.

CASE ANALYSIS

Scenario

A continuous reactor needs stable feed heating and liquid inventory control.

Key decisions

  • Heat input: TT-101 and TIC-101 adjust preheater steam.
  • Inventory: LT-101 and LIC-101 control the reactor outlet.
  • Process path: Feed passes through the preheater before entering the reactor.
  • Fail states: Both diaphragm control valves close on loss of actuator air.

When to reuse this

Use this process P&ID for a conceptual continuous reactor system with preheated feed and temperature and level control loops.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why control reactor level?01
Level control maintains liquid inventory and a stable residence time in the reactor.
What does the preheater do?02
It raises feed temperature before the feed enters the reactor.
Why are there two loops?03
Reactor temperature and liquid inventory are separate process variables that need independent control.
