Motor Control Ladder Diagram Examples

Motor control is the classic ladder-logic problem — the start/stop seal-in rung is the first thing every PLC programmer learns, and the patterns extend to every latched output.

How to

How to use a ladder logic template.

  1. 01Define the I/O

Name the start/stop buttons, overloads, and motor contactor outputs.

  2. 02Build the seal-in

Describe the latch (start OR motor-running, AND NOT stop); the AI draws the seal-in rung with the holding contact.

  3. 03Add interlocks

Include safety interlocks (overload, e-stop) as normally-closed contacts in series.

  4. 04Export for the panel

Export PNG/SVG for the control panel documentation or PLC program reference.

FAQ

Questions about ladder logic templates

What is a seal-in circuit?

A latching rung where the output's own contact is wired in parallel with the start button, so the motor keeps running after the momentary start button is released — until the stop button breaks the rung.

When should I use set/reset instead of a seal-in?

Set/reset (OTL/OTU) latches an output across separate rungs and survives even a program scan reorganization. It suits mode selection and state-holding; the seal-in suits simple start/stop.

How are safety interlocks shown?

As normally-closed (XIO) contacts in series on the rung, so that a tripped overload or pressed e-stop opens the rung and de-energizes the output.
