Process Control P&ID Examples

Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) are the engineering bible of process facilities — every pipe, valve, instrument, and control loop drawn to ISA 5.1 standard so operators and engineers read the same document.

How to

How to use a p&id template.

  1. 01Map the process flow

Describe the main process stream — where it enters, what happens to it (heat, mix, react), and where it exits.

  2. 02Add the equipment

Name the major equipment (vessels, pumps, heat exchangers) — the AI uses standard ISA 5.1 symbols.

  3. 03Add instrumentation

Describe each measurement (temperature, pressure, flow) and its tag number (e.g., TT-101 for temperature transmitter 101).

  4. 04Show the control loops

Describe how each measurement feeds back to a controller and what valve it manipulates — the AI draws the control loop with ISA tag conventions.

FAQ

Questions about p&id templates

What is a P&ID?

A Piping and Instrumentation Diagram shows all pipes, vessels, equipment, instruments, and control loops in a process facility. It is the primary engineering document for design, operations, and safety reviews.

What is ISA 5.1 notation?

The ANSI/ISA standard for P&ID symbols. Instrument tags follow a specific format: first letter is the measured variable (T=Temperature, P=Pressure, F=Flow), subsequent letters are the function (C=Controller, T=Transmitter, I=Indicator). Circles are field instruments; squares are control room instruments.

What is a control loop?

A feedback loop in a process: a transmitter measures a process variable, a controller compares it to setpoint, and a control element (valve, VFD) adjusts the process. P&IDs show all three elements with their tag numbers and connecting signal lines.
