Substation Single Line Diagrams

Substation single line diagrams represent the complete power transformation and switching architecture — from the incoming high-voltage line through the power transformer, busbars, protection systems, and outgoing feeders — in a single conductor drawing that communicates the system's electrical topology without multiline detail.

How to

How to use a single‑line diagram template.

  1. 01Specify the substation voltage levels and transformer rating

Example: '33/11kV primary substation, 20MVA ONAN transformer, single busbar on 11kV side, two 33kV incomers with circuit breakers and disconnectors, 6 outgoing 11kV feeder panels.'

  2. 02AI generates the HV to LV transformation path

ChatDiagram draws the HV incoming line, circuit breaker and isolator symbols, power transformer with vector group annotation, LV busbar, and outgoing feeder circuit breakers.

  3. 03Add protection relay scheme

Specify the protection philosophy: transformer differential (87T), overcurrent and earth fault (51/51N) on each feeder, distance (21) on transmission lines, bus protection (87B). ChatDiagram labels CT connections and relay blocks accordingly.

  4. 04Include SCADA and metering points

Describe metering requirements (revenue grade on each incoming, indication on outgoing). ChatDiagram adds VT and CT symbols at correct locations and notes SCADA RTU connection points.

  5. 05Export for utility approval and as-built records

Export as SVG for scalable drawings or high-resolution PNG. The output is suitable for utility engineering review, protection settings documents, and O&M manuals.

FAQ

Questions about single‑line diagram templates

Can ChatDiagram show both primary and secondary voltage levels in one SLD?

Yes. The SLD will show the HV incoming, transformer, and LV busbar sections with each voltage level labeled. Separate sections are visually delineated for clarity.

Does it support GIS (gas-insulated switchgear) substation SLDs?

Yes. Describe a GIS arrangement and ChatDiagram will use GIS-specific enclosure blocks for the busbar and bay modules rather than the open air arrangement symbols.

How do I show a transformer neutral earthing arrangement?

Specify solid earth, resistance earth, or Petersen coil. ChatDiagram will draw the correct neutral earthing symbol on the transformer LV winding connection.

Can it generate an SLD for an autotransformer substation?

Yes. Describe the autotransformer voltage ratio and tertiary winding if present. ChatDiagram will draw the autotransformer symbol with all three terminal connections and their respective bus connections.
