Group Dynamics Sociogram Examples

Sociograms map the relationships within a group — who chooses whom, who is isolated, who is a connector — making social structure visible in a way that observation alone cannot.

How to

How to use a sociogram template.

  1. 01List the group members

Name each person — they become the nodes of the sociogram.

  2. 02Describe the relationships

For each pair, say whether there is a connection and its direction (mutual, one-way, or absent).

  3. 03Indicate relationship type or strength

Label connections as friendship, collaboration, influence, or conflict — and optionally weight by frequency or strength.

  4. 04Identify key positions

Look for central connectors (high degree), bridges (between clusters), and isolates (no connections) — these are the intervention points.

FAQ

Questions about sociogram templates

What is a sociogram?

A network diagram that shows the social relationships within a group. Nodes are people; edges are relationships. Developed by Jacob Moreno for sociometry in the 1930s.

What does a sociogram tell you that a survey cannot?

A sociogram shows the structure of the network — who is central, who bridges groups, and who is isolated — rather than just individual responses. The pattern of connections reveals group dynamics that individual data misses.

How is a sociogram different from an org chart?

An org chart shows formal reporting relationships. A sociogram shows informal social relationships — who talks to whom, who is trusted, who influences whom — regardless of the formal hierarchy.
