Pressure Switch Compressor Control

A pneumatic compressor control circuit starts and stops the compressor according to receiver pressure. This control schematic uses a pressure switch as the demand signal. When pressure falls below its cut-in setting, the switch closes and energizes the contactor coil, subject to the stop and overload contacts. The contactor output also powers a run pilot light. At the cut-out pressure, the pressure switch opens and the compressor stops. The motor power circuit, starter rating, and earth connection belong on the associated power drawing. Set the pressure-switch range, overload, and contactor coil voltage for the actual compressor installation. Include manual isolation in the installation documentation.

CASE ANALYSIS

Scenario

Receiver pressure control

Key decisions

  • Pressure input: The pressure switch requests compressor operation.
  • Protection: Put overload protection in series with the contactor coil.
  • Status: Feed the run lamp from the contactor output.

When to reuse this

Use for the control portion of a compressor that fills a pneumatic receiver.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does a compressor pressure switch do?01
It closes at a low cut-in pressure to start the compressor and opens at the high cut-out pressure to stop it.
Why include an overload contact?02
It opens the control circuit if the motor overload trips, preventing the contactor from remaining energized.
Is this the motor power circuit?03
No. It is the low-voltage control circuit; the motor power wiring is shown separately.
