FLOW CONTROL

Pump Discharge Flow Control Loop

This instrument loop diagram shows a basic pump discharge flow-control arrangement. Water leaves the feed tank through a centrifugal pump and passes through the controlled discharge line. FT-101 measures the flow immediately downstream of the pump and sends an electric signal to FIC-101. The flow indicating controller compares that measurement to its setpoint and sends a pneumatic output to FV-101. Moving the valve changes the downstream resistance and therefore the flow delivered to the process. The valve is labelled fail closed, which stops flow if the actuator loses air. This compact loop is useful for instrument design review, commissioning, and technician training. Add alarms, bypasses, minimum-flow protection, and detailed line data when the process requires them.

CASE ANALYSIS

Scenario

A process line needs to hold a pump discharge flow at a controller setpoint.

Key decisions

  • Measurement: FT-101 reads the pump discharge line.
  • Control: FIC-101 compares flow with its setpoint.
  • Final element: FV-101 throttles the outlet flow.
  • Fail state: The diaphragm valve closes on loss of actuator air.

When to reuse this

Use this pattern for a simple liquid-flow loop downstream of a centrifugal pump.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does FT-101 measure?01
It measures the water flow in the pump discharge line.
What does FIC-101 control?02
It adjusts FV-101 to hold the selected flow setpoint.
Why is FV-101 fail closed?03
Closing the valve on loss of air stops the controlled flow path.
