The drawing

What a block flow diagram is.

A block flow diagram gives a high-level view of a process. Each block represents a major operation or grouped process train, and the arrows show the material or energy streams that connect them.

It is useful at the start of a process design because it communicates scope, inputs, products, byproducts and recycles without pretending to be a detailed piping drawing. Add equipment, control loops and line information later in a process-flow diagram or P&ID.

FAQ

Common questions

What is a block flow diagram used for?

A block flow diagram gives a high-level overview of an industrial process. It shows major operations as labeled blocks and the material or energy streams connecting them.

How is a block flow diagram different from a P&ID?

A block flow diagram shows only the main stages and streams. A P&ID adds detailed piping, valves, instruments, control loops and equipment information used for design and operation.

What should I include in a block flow diagram?

Include the main process stages, important feeds, products, byproducts and recycle streams. Group lower-level operations when they are not needed for the purpose of the diagram.

Which industries use block flow diagrams?

They are used in chemical processing, oil and gas, water treatment, food production, pharmaceuticals, energy and other industries that need to communicate a process at summary level.
