What a C4 model diagram is.
The C4 model documents software architecture at four levels of detail: context, containers, components and code. Start broad with people and external systems, then zoom into the applications, services and modules that implement the system.
A C4 diagram should answer one question at one level. Use a context view for scope, a container view for running applications and data stores, a component view for responsibilities inside one container, and a code view only when readers need that depth.

Who uses C4 model diagrams.
A shared sequence of context, container and component views that explains a system without mixing levels.
Service responsibilities and dependencies to guide implementation and code reviews.
System scope and external integrations that can be understood without implementation detail.

Common questions
What is a C4 model diagram?
C4 is a hierarchical approach to documenting software architecture with Context, Containers, Components and Code views. Each view adds detail while keeping the same system story.
What are the four C's in the C4 model?
Context shows system scope and users; Containers show applications and data stores; Components show major responsibilities inside a container; and Code shows selected implementation-level structure.
When should I use a C4 model diagram?
Use C4 when you need to explain a software architecture to different audiences, from stakeholders who need scope to developers who need service or component boundaries.
How is C4 different from UML?
C4 is a focused way to document software architecture at increasing levels of zoom. UML includes several diagram types for a wider range of software and behavioral modeling needs.
