The drawing

What a genogram is.

A genogram is a family tree that also records relationships and health. Squares are men, circles are women, a double line is a close bond, a jagged line is conflict, and a shaded shape marks a condition.

It is the standard picture in family therapy, social work and genetic counselling, because it shows in one page what a case file takes ten pages to say.

FAQ

Common questions

What is a genogram?

A family tree that also records relationships and health. Squares are men, circles are women, a double line is a close bond, a jagged line is conflict, and a shaded shape marks a condition.

How is it different from a family tree?

A family tree records who is related to whom. A genogram adds the part clinicians care about: emotional ties, cutoffs, substance use, illness, who shares a household, and which person the case is about.

Which notation do you follow?

McGoldrick, Gerson and Petry, the reference most training programmes teach, plus the NSGC standard when you ask for a clinical pedigree instead.

Can I use it in a case file or a report?

Yes. Export as SVG or PDF at any size, or share a link. Nothing is watermarked.

Do I have to draw anything?

No. You describe the family in ordinary sentences and the drawing is generated. To change it, say what is different.
