What a snowflake schema is.
A snowflake schema is a data warehouse design with a central fact table and dimensions that are normalized into additional hierarchy tables. For example, Product can link to Subcategory, which links to Category.
It reduces repeated descriptive data and makes shared hierarchies explicit. The trade-off is that reports need more joins than with a flat star schema.

Common questions
What is a snowflake schema?
It is a dimensional model in which dimension tables are normalized into related hierarchy tables around a central fact table.
Why use a snowflake schema?
It can reduce repeated dimension attributes and make shared hierarchies easier to govern.
What is the difference between a star and snowflake schema?
A star has flatter dimensions connected directly to the fact. A snowflake adds normalized tables within the dimensions.
What should be normalized?
Normalize stable, reusable hierarchies such as category, geography, specialty or organizational level when that clarity is worth the extra joins.
