The drawing

What an ecomap is.

An ecomap places a person or family at the centre and draws the external systems that affect them, such as family, work, health care, school, legal services and community groups. Line styles show whether a connection is strong, ordinary, stressful, conflictual or broken.

Social workers and care teams use an ecomap to discuss strengths, gaps and pressure points in a support network. Use only the information needed for the assessment and protect sensitive client details.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ecomap used for in social work?

An ecomap helps assess a client or family's connections to external systems, identify sources of support and stress, and find gaps that may need attention.

What do the lines in an ecomap mean?

Line styles communicate the quality of a connection. They can show strong, moderate, ordinary, stressful, conflictual or broken relationships, with arrows when direction matters.

What is the difference between an ecomap and a genogram?

An ecomap focuses on connections to external systems and communities. A genogram focuses on family structure and relationships across generations.

Should an ecomap include confidential details?

Include only the information needed for the purpose and follow your organization's privacy, consent and record-handling requirements.
