What a GRAFCET / SFC diagram is.
A GRAFCET, also called a Sequential Function Chart (SFC), shows a control sequence as steps, actions and transitions. A step becomes active, its actions run, and the chart advances only when the transition condition is true.
It is useful for machinery where the order matters: filling, heating, moving, checking and resetting. The chart records the intended behavior before PLC code is written.

Who uses GRAFCET / SFC diagrams.
Control-sequence specifications that map states, actions and transition conditions before implementation.
Packaging and handling sequences that make actuator order and sensor feedback clear during commissioning.
Batch and cleaning procedures that communicate the normal operating sequence to operations and controls teams.

Common questions
What is GRAFCET?
GRAFCET is a formal graphical language for sequential control. It represents active steps, the actions associated with them, and transitions that fire when their conditions are met.
How is an SFC different from a flowchart?
A flowchart describes a process broadly. An SFC defines control states and transition conditions, which makes it suitable for PLC sequence design.
Can an SFC show parallel actions?
Yes. A simultaneous divergence can start parallel branches, and a convergence can wait for their completion before continuing.
What should I include in an SFC prompt?
Describe the initial state, each operation, the sensor or timer condition that completes it, and any alternative or parallel paths.
