The drawing

What a microservices architecture diagram is.

A microservices architecture diagram shows independently deployed services and the ways they communicate. It usually includes a client entry point, service boundaries, data stores and synchronous or asynchronous connections.

The diagram is not a list of every endpoint. Its job is to make ownership and dependency visible: which service handles an area, what it relies on, and whether it calls another service directly or publishes an event.

How it works

How to make a microservices architecture diagram in three steps.

Describe it

One paragraph is enough to start.

“Create a microservices architecture with client apps, an API gateway, auth, user, order, inventory and notification services, a message bus or event queue, and monitoring and tracing. Route order and inventory events through the message bus to notifications.”

FAQ

Common questions

What is a microservices architecture diagram?

It is a visual view of independently deployable services, their boundaries, the data they own and the communication paths between them.

What should a microservices diagram include?

Include client entry points, services, their owned data stores, gateways, message brokers and the important request or event connections.

Should each microservice have its own database?

A service should own the data it changes. Whether that means a separate physical database depends on the system's needs and operational constraints.

How do synchronous and asynchronous communication differ?

A synchronous request waits for a response from another service. An asynchronous event is published for other services to consume without the sender waiting for them.
