What a pie chart is.
A pie chart shows how one whole is divided among categories. Each slice represents a category, and its angle or area is proportional to that category’s value.
It is most useful when categories are few, mutually exclusive and add up to a meaningful total. For many categories or small differences, a bar chart is usually easier to compare.

Common questions
What is a pie chart?
A circular chart that divides a total into slices. Each slice shows a category’s share of the whole.
When should I use a pie chart?
Use it for a small number of categories that add to one total, such as a budget, sales mix or survey response split.
Can a pie chart show percentages?
Yes. Labels can show each category name, value, percentage, or a combination of these.
When is a bar chart better than a pie chart?
A bar chart is better when there are many categories or when readers need to compare similarly sized values precisely.
