What a polar area chart is.
A polar area chart is a circular chart made of equal-angle segments whose radii vary with the data value. It is sometimes called a rose chart. Unlike a pie chart, its slices do not use angles to represent their values.
Use it for a small set of categories where the circular arrangement supports the story, such as months, directions or survey themes. Add direct labels and values because differences in area are harder to estimate than differences in bar length.

Common questions
What is a polar area chart?
A polar area chart is a circular chart with equal-angle segments that vary in radius according to each value. It is also known as a rose chart.
How is a polar area chart different from a pie chart?
Pie-chart values are represented by slice angles. Polar area-chart segments use the same angle, while the radius and area change with the value.
When should I use a polar area chart?
Use one for a small set of categories, especially cyclical categories such as months or directions. Use bars when precise value comparison is the priority.
How many categories work well in a polar area chart?
A short labeled set is clearest, often five to eight categories. More segments make labels and relative areas difficult to read.
