What a star schema is.
A star schema is a data warehouse design with a fact table at the center and dimension tables around it. The fact holds measurements at a defined grain, such as each sale, click or claim.
Dimensions hold the descriptive context used to filter and group those measurements, such as date, product, customer and location. Their links to the fact form the star shape.

Common questions
What is a star schema?
It is a data warehouse design in which one central fact table links directly to several descriptive dimension tables.
What belongs in a fact table?
A fact table stores measurements and foreign keys at a declared grain, such as one row per sale or one row per claim.
What belongs in a dimension table?
A dimension stores descriptive attributes used for filtering, grouping and reporting, such as product name, date or location.
How is a star schema different from a snowflake schema?
A star schema keeps dimensions relatively flat. A snowflake schema normalizes dimension hierarchies into additional tables.
