The drawing

What a structured cabling diagram is.

A structured cabling diagram shows the physical cabling system that connects a building or site. It maps the main distribution frame, intermediate distribution frames, patch panels, backbone fiber, horizontal cable runs, racks, and work area outlets.

It is different from a logical network diagram because the permanent cable path and termination points are the focus. Clear labels connect the drawing to room records, patch-panel ports, and physical outlet identifiers.

FAQ

Common questions

What is a structured cabling diagram?

It is a drawing of the physical cabling infrastructure, including distribution rooms, patching, backbone links, and work area outlets.

What is the difference between an MDF and an IDF?

The MDF is the central distribution location; an IDF is a local distribution point that serves an area or floor from the MDF.

What cable types should be labelled?

Label the permanent media where useful, such as fiber for the backbone and Cat6 or Cat6A for horizontal runs.

How should work area outlets be named?

Use a consistent unique identifier that links the outlet to its room, patch panel, and port record.
