What a VLAN diagram is.
A VLAN diagram shows how one physical network is divided into separate logical networks. It identifies the VLAN IDs, the switches and devices in each segment, and the links that carry one or more VLANs.
Use access labels for a device that belongs to one VLAN and trunk labels for an uplink carrying several VLANs. Add the router, firewall or Layer 3 switch that provides inter-VLAN routing when segments must communicate.

Who uses VLAN diagrams.
Record trunk uplinks, access ports and VLAN assignments before changing a switch configuration.
Review whether cameras, point-of-sale devices and office systems are separated into the intended zones.
Document redundant host uplinks and the management and workload VLANs they carry.

Common questions
What is a VLAN diagram?
A VLAN diagram maps the logical segments on a switched network. It can show VLAN IDs, member devices, access ports, trunk links and the device that routes between VLANs.
What is the difference between an access port and a trunk port?
An access port carries traffic for one VLAN, usually to an endpoint. A trunk port carries traffic for multiple VLANs, usually between network devices, using VLAN tags.
How do I show inter-VLAN routing?
Include the router, firewall or Layer 3 switch that connects the VLANs, and label its uplink or interfaces with the VLANs it handles.
What should I label in a VLAN diagram?
Label each VLAN with an ID and purpose, then label relevant switch ports as access or trunk. Include connected devices where they help explain the segment.
