How to

How to use a pedigree chart template.

  1. 01Lay out the generations

Build the family tree with generations numbered I, II, III; the AI uses standard pedigree symbols.

  2. 02Mark affected and carriers

Fill affected individuals; half-fill known carriers; leave unaffected open.

  3. 03Identify the proband

Mark the index case with an arrow so the analysis is anchored.

  4. 04Read the pattern

Look at who is affected across generations and sexes to infer the inheritance mode, then export for the record.

FAQ

Questions about pedigree chart templates

How do I read an inheritance pattern from a pedigree?

Autosomal dominant: affected in every generation, both sexes. Autosomal recessive: skips generations, both sexes. X-linked recessive: mostly affected males, through carrier mothers.

What is a carrier?

An individual who carries one copy of a recessive disease allele but is unaffected. Two carrier parents have a 25% chance of an affected child for an autosomal recessive condition.

What does the arrow (proband) mean?

The proband is the first person in the family to be clinically assessed. The arrow marks them so the rest of the family is described in relation to that index case.
