What a BCG matrix is.
A BCG matrix, also called a growth-share matrix, compares offerings on market growth and relative market share. It groups products or business units into Stars, Cash Cows, Question Marks and Dogs.
Stars often need investment to sustain growth. Cash Cows can generate funds in mature markets. Question Marks need a decision about where to focus, while Dogs may deserve less investment or a planned exit.
