What a D flip-flop is.
A D flip-flop is a clocked storage element that copies its D input to Q at an active clock edge. It then holds Q steady until the next active edge, making it useful for synchronous digital logic.
Q-bar is the inverse of Q. Some devices also provide asynchronous clear or preset inputs, which establish a known state without waiting for a clock edge.

Common questions
What is a D flip-flop?
A D flip-flop captures the value on D at its active clock edge and holds that value on Q until the next active edge.
How is a D flip-flop different from a D latch?
A D latch is level-sensitive while enabled. A D flip-flop changes state at a clock edge.
What signals does a D flip-flop diagram show?
The basic diagram shows D, clock, Q and Q-bar. It can also show clear and preset control inputs.
What is Q-bar?
Q-bar is the complemented output. It has the opposite logic value to Q.
