The drawing

What a garden plan is.

A garden plan is a top-down layout of an outdoor space. It shows fixed features such as a house or patio alongside paths, lawns, planting areas, trees and garden structures, so their size and relationship are clear.

It is a useful first drawing for arranging a new garden or changing an existing one. Start with the boundaries and features that cannot move, then place paths and planting zones around how the space will be used.

FAQ

Common questions

What is a garden design tool?

A garden design tool helps turn a description of an outdoor space into a simple plan with planting areas, paths, structures and features.

What should I put in a garden plan?

Start with the property edge, house, patio and existing trees. Then add paths, lawns, beds, water features and other areas you want to use.

Can I plan vegetables and ornamental planting together?

Yes. Use separate labelled zones for vegetables, flowers, trees and shrubs so access and space needs are visible.

Can I change the garden layout after it is drawn?

Yes. Ask to move a path, replace a planting bed, add a feature or change the size of an area.
