What a Sankey diagram is.
A Sankey diagram shows a quantity moving from one stage to another, with each link drawn in proportion to its value. It makes large transfers, splits and losses visible faster than a table of flows.
Start with a clearly defined total and include the unit and time period. Flows should balance at each stage where the source data permits it, including losses, waste and exits.

Common questions
What is a Sankey diagram?
A Sankey diagram is a flow chart whose link widths are proportional to the quantity moving between nodes.
What data do I need for a Sankey diagram?
List every source, target and flow value, plus the unit and reporting period. Include losses or exits when they are part of the balance.
How is a Sankey diagram different from a flowchart?
A flowchart shows sequence and relationships, usually with equal-width connectors. A Sankey chart additionally makes connector width represent quantity.
