What a dot plot is.
A dot plot places one dot for every observation along a number line. Equal values stack, which makes the frequency of repeated values visible while preserving the original data points.
It is especially useful for small datasets. Unlike a histogram, a dot plot does not group observations into bins, so you can see exact values as well as the overall shape of the distribution.

Common questions
What is a dot plot?
A dot plot is a statistical chart with one dot per observation on a number line. Stacked dots show how often a value occurs, so the distribution remains visible.
When should I use a dot plot?
Use one for a small or medium-sized numerical dataset when exact observations matter. For very large datasets, a histogram or box plot is usually easier to read.
How do I read a dot plot?
Look for the tallest stacks, the range from the first to last dot, gaps and isolated dots. These reveal the most common values, spread, clusters and possible outliers.
What is the difference between a dot plot and a scatter plot?
A dot plot shows the distribution of one numerical variable, often stacking equal values. A scatter plot compares two numerical variables by placing each observation at an x and y coordinate.
