What an IDEF0 diagram is.
IDEF0 is a function-modeling method. Each activity box has Inputs on the left, Controls above it, Outputs on the right and Mechanisms below it; together these are called ICOM.
A context diagram can show one top-level function, while a decomposition diagram breaks that function into smaller activities. It is useful when the question is what a function needs and produces, not simply what happens next.

Common questions
What is an IDEF0 diagram?
IDEF0 is a structured way to model functions in a system. Its ICOM layout shows each function’s inputs, controls, outputs and mechanisms.
How is IDEF0 different from a flowchart?
A flowchart emphasizes sequence and decisions. IDEF0 emphasizes what a function needs, what governs it, what it produces and what resources perform it.
What are inputs, controls, outputs and mechanisms?
Inputs are transformed by the function. Controls constrain or guide it. Outputs are its results. Mechanisms are the people, systems or equipment that carry it out.
Can an IDEF0 model be decomposed?
Yes. Begin with a high-level function, then create child functions that explain how that work is performed in more detail.
When should I use a context diagram?
Use one when you need to define the scope of a process before modeling its internal activities.
