What a ladder diagram is.
A ladder diagram represents relay-style control logic as horizontal rungs between power rails. Contacts test input or internal conditions, and coils command outputs or stored bits.
It is widely used for PLC control because start, stop, fault and interlock logic can be read from left to right. Separate rungs make each control purpose easier to review.

Common questions
What is a ladder diagram?
It is a graphical PLC programming language based on relay circuits, with conditions on the left and outputs or instructions on the right.
What are XIC and XIO contacts?
XIC tests whether a bit is on, while XIO tests whether a bit is off. They are commonly used to model normally open and normally closed logic conditions.
What is a seal-in circuit?
A seal-in contact holds an output on after a momentary start command, until a stop, fault or other opening condition breaks the logic.
Can ladder logic include timers?
Yes. Timer instructions can delay an action, time a process step or provide a done condition for another rung.
