A ladder logic diagram represents PLC control logic as horizontal rungs between two rails. Contacts test inputs or conditions, and coils, timers and other instructions drive outputs or store control state.
It is modelled on relay circuits, which makes the sequence readable to electricians and control engineers. A clear diagram labels every input, output and rung purpose.

A ladder logic diagram is a visual PLC programming language based on relay circuits. Each rung represents a path from the left rail to an output, using contacts, coils, timers and counters.
What symbols are used in ladder logic?
The core symbols are normally open and normally closed contacts, output coils, timers, counters and comparison or math instructions. They express input conditions and the action taken when those conditions are true.
What is the difference between normally open and normally closed contacts?
A normally open contact passes logic when its associated condition is true. A normally closed contact passes logic when that condition is false, which is useful for stop buttons and safety interlocks.
Can I use a ladder diagram instead of PLC programming software?
Use it to plan, document and teach the logic. You still need the PLC manufacturer's software to configure hardware and download the program to a physical controller.
