What a multiplexer is.
A multiplexer, or MUX, selects one of several inputs and routes it to one output. The binary value on its select lines determines which data input reaches the output.
A 2-to-1 multiplexer has two inputs and one select line. A 4-to-1 multiplexer has four inputs and two select lines, and the same structure can also implement a Boolean truth table.

Common questions
What is a multiplexer?
A multiplexer selects one of several input signals and routes the selected signal to one output.
How many select lines does a 4-to-1 multiplexer use?
It uses two select lines because two binary bits can address four input choices.
How is a multiplexer different from a demultiplexer?
A multiplexer is many-to-one, while a demultiplexer routes one input to one of several outputs.
Can a multiplexer implement Boolean functions?
Yes. Wiring its data inputs to truth-table values lets the select inputs act as the Boolean variables.
