What a network security diagram is.
A network security diagram shows the security-relevant parts of an environment: zones, firewalls, gateways, workloads and the paths traffic takes between them. It makes the boundaries and controls around an application or network segment visible.
Draw the path from an external user or service to the protected workload, then add the controls that inspect, route or limit that traffic. Focus on the components that affect security decisions rather than every endpoint on the network.

Common questions
What belongs in a network security diagram?
Include the relevant security zones, firewalls, gateways, workloads, identity or access services, and the paths between them.
How do I show security zones?
Group components into labeled boundaries such as internet, DMZ, user network, application network and protected data network, then show the controls between them.
Can a security diagram show data flow?
Yes. Use directed, labeled connections to show where a request enters, which controls it traverses, and which application or data service receives it.
How detailed should a network security diagram be?
Include enough detail to review segmentation and controls, but omit devices that do not affect the security decision the drawing is meant to support.
