What an RLC circuit is.
An RLC circuit combines a resistor, inductor, and capacitor. At its resonant frequency, the inductor and capacitor have equal and opposite reactance, so the circuit response changes sharply with frequency.
Series and parallel arrangements behave differently: a series RLC path has low impedance near resonance, while a parallel tank has high input impedance. The resistor represents intentional damping, source resistance, or real component loss and sets how selective the circuit is.

Common questions
What is the resonant frequency of an RLC circuit?
For ideal inductance L and capacitance C, resonant frequency is f₀ = 1 / (2π√LC). Real coils, capacitors, source resistance, and loads shift and broaden the actual response.
What is the difference between series and parallel RLC circuits?
In a series RLC circuit, the same current flows through all three parts and impedance is lowest near resonance. In a parallel RLC circuit, the parts share voltage and input impedance is highest near resonance.
What does Q mean in an RLC circuit?
Q, or quality factor, describes how sharply the circuit resonates. Higher Q generally means a narrower bandwidth and less damping, but practical losses limit it.
How do I choose R, L, and C values?
Choose L and C to set the target resonance, then choose or calculate resistance for the required damping and bandwidth. Check the result against real component tolerances and parasitic resistance.
