What a VRIO analysis is.
A VRIO analysis tests a resource or capability against four questions: is it valuable, rare, costly to imitate and organized for use? The answers indicate whether it creates a disadvantage, parity, a temporary advantage or a sustained advantage.
It helps a strategy team separate an attractive idea from an advantage the business can actually keep. Assess specific resources, state the evidence behind each answer, then decide what to protect, build or stop funding.

Common questions
What does VRIO stand for?
VRIO stands for Value, Rarity, Imitability and Organization. It is a framework for assessing whether a resource or capability can create competitive advantage.
What are the outcomes of a VRIO analysis?
A resource that is not valuable is a competitive disadvantage. Valuable but common resources create parity; valuable and rare resources can create a temporary advantage; resources that also are hard to imitate and well organized can support a sustained advantage.
What should I include in a VRIO analysis?
List concrete resources and capabilities, such as a supplier relationship, a process, a brand asset, data or specialist knowledge. Record the evidence for each of the four questions rather than rating the whole company at once.
When should I use VRIO analysis?
Use it when setting strategy, reviewing an investment, preparing a market entry or deciding which capabilities to develop. Update the assessment when competitors or the market change.
