What a work breakdown structure is.
A work breakdown structure, or WBS, divides a project into deliverables and smaller pieces of work. The top level is the whole project; lower levels show phases, work packages and the scope that belongs in each one.
A WBS defines what must be delivered, rather than when it happens. Use it before building a schedule, assigning owners or estimating cost, so the project team has the same view of the work.
