What a capability map is.
A capability map describes what an organization is able to do, from broad domains to more specific abilities. It is a stable business view, not a diagram of people or current processes.
Teams, systems and projects can be mapped to capabilities after the structure is agreed. That makes the map useful for strategy, operating-model and investment conversations.

Common questions
What is a capability map?
A capability map is a hierarchical view of the enduring abilities an organization needs to perform.
How is it different from an organization chart?
An organization chart shows reporting relationships. A capability map shows what the business can do, regardless of who owns the work.
How many levels should a capability map have?
Start with two or three levels. Add detail only where it supports a decision or exposes a meaningful difference.
What should not appear on a capability map?
Avoid temporary project names, job titles and detailed process steps. Those change more often than the capabilities themselves.
