What an instrument loop diagram is.
An instrument loop diagram shows the control path for one process variable. It identifies what is measured, the transmitter that sends the measurement, the controller that compares it with a setpoint, and the final element that changes the process.
It is narrower than a P&ID: instead of documenting the whole process, it makes one measurement-and-control relationship easy to install, test, and troubleshoot.

Common questions
What is an instrument loop diagram?
It documents one control loop, from the measured process variable through the transmitter and controller to the final control element.
What is the difference between a loop diagram and a P&ID?
A P&ID shows the wider process and its equipment. A loop diagram focuses on one control relationship and its signal path.
What information should I include?
Name the process equipment, measured variable, transmitter, controller, final element, signal types, and any required fail position.
What do common instrument tags mean?
For example, FT is a flow transmitter, FIC is a flow indicating controller, TT is a temperature transmitter, and TIC is a temperature indicating controller.
