What a P&ID diagram is.
A piping and instrumentation diagram, or P&ID, shows process equipment, the pipes between it, valves, and the instruments that monitor or control the process. It uses equipment tags and standard symbols so engineers can discuss the same system precisely.
A P&ID describes process function and connections, not physical pipe routing or construction dimensions. Use it to review a process before producing detailed piping layouts and installation documents.

Common questions
What is a P&ID?
It is a process engineering drawing that shows equipment, piping, valves, instruments, and control relationships.
What is the difference between a P&ID and a process flow diagram?
A process flow diagram is a high-level view of major streams and equipment. A P&ID adds piping details, valves, instrument tags, and control signals.
What should a P&ID include?
Include major equipment, process connections, line services, valves, instruments, control loops, and relief or isolation devices relevant to the scope.
What do ISA instrument tags mean?
The letters identify the variable and function, such as PT for pressure transmitter, LIC for level indicating controller, and PSV for pressure safety valve.
