What a P&ID is.
A P&ID, short for piping and instrumentation diagram, shows the equipment, process piping, valves, instruments and control relationships in a process system. Tags identify the parts so engineers and operators can discuss the same system precisely.
It describes how the process operates rather than where equipment is physically located. A clear P&ID starts with the process path, then adds the isolation, measurement and control details needed for the intended review.

Common questions
What does P&ID stand for?
P&ID stands for piping and instrumentation diagram, an engineering schematic for a process system.
What equipment can a P&ID show?
It can show tanks, vessels, pumps, heat exchangers, reactors, filters, piping and valves, alongside their instrumentation.
What are P&ID control loops?
A control loop connects a measurement, such as flow or temperature, to a controller and final element such as a control valve.
Is a P&ID a piping layout drawing?
No. It is a schematic of process and control relationships. Physical pipe routing and construction details need separate drawings.
