The drawing

What a piping and instrumentation diagram is.

A piping and instrumentation diagram, usually called a P&ID, is an engineering schematic of a process system. It identifies equipment, process piping, valves, instruments and the signals that connect measurement to control.

A P&ID is more detailed than a process flow diagram because it records the control and isolation details needed to discuss operation, maintenance and safety. It is a structured design document, not a physical piping route or construction drawing.

FAQ

Common questions

What is a piping and instrumentation diagram?

A P&ID is an engineering drawing that shows process equipment, piping, valves, instruments and control devices in a process system.

What goes on a P&ID?

A P&ID can include tanks, pumps, heat exchangers, piping, isolation and control valves, sensors, controllers and signal lines.

How is a P&ID different from a process flow diagram?

A process flow diagram shows the high-level material flow and major equipment. A P&ID adds valves, instruments, control loops and operating details.

Who uses P&IDs?

Process, chemical and mechanical engineers, instrumentation specialists, operators and maintenance teams use P&IDs during design and operation.
