The drawing

What a pedigree chart is.

A pedigree chart is a clinical family tree. It records relationships and genetic or health status with standard symbols: squares, circles, partner lines, child lines, shading and carrier marks.

It gives a genetic counselor, clinician or student one view of a family pattern. Mark the proband with an arrow, then add reported diagnoses, test status and relevant ages as the history is collected.

FAQ

Common questions

What is a pedigree chart?

A pedigree chart is a standardized family diagram used in clinical genetics. It shows relationships between relatives and can record affected status, carrier status, deaths and the person whose case prompted the assessment.

What inheritance patterns can I show?

Use it for autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive and X-linked patterns, as well as an unclassified family history. Describe the relatives and their reported status so the symbols can be placed correctly.

How do I mark the proband?

State which person brought the family to clinical attention. The chart marks that person as the proband with an arrow.

What do carrier symbols mean?

A carrier mark indicates that a person has a relevant variant or reported carrier status without being recorded as affected by the condition.

Can I use a pedigree chart for coursework?

Yes. Describe the family in a genetics problem, including relationships and affected status, then refine the drawing with the details your course requires.
